⏰ This takes 2 WEEKS!
You will check your onions 3 times:
- Day 0 (today - when you start)
- Day 7 (after 1 week)
- Day 14 (after 2 weeks - end!)
🔬 The Question:
Do plants need light to grow?
You will test 2 onions.
One onion gets light. One onion stays in the dark.
Which one will grow better?
🧪 What you need:
- 2 green onions (from grocery store)
- 2 clear plastic cups (same size)
- Water
- Tape and marker (to label cups)
- Dark cabinet (for dark onion)
- Ruler (to measure height)
- Scale (to weigh onions)
📝 Setup - Day 0 (Today):
- Get 2 green onions. Pick ones that look the same size.
- Label Cup #1: Write "DARK" on the cup.
- Label Cup #2: Write "LIGHT" on the cup.
- Fill both cups with water (about halfway).
- Put onion roots in water. Onion bottom should touch water.
- Measure both onions: Write height and weight in the table below.
- Put DARK onion in cabinet. Close door! No light!
- Put LIGHT onion on counter in classroom. Leave it there!
📊 Write what you see:
Measure your onions on Day 0, Day 7, and Day 14.
🤔 Think about it:
- Which onion grew taller?
- Which onion got heavier (more grams)?
- Which onion stayed green?
- Why did the dark onion turn yellow?
- Do plants need light? How do you know?
💡 What you learned:
DARK onion:
- Grew TALL but thin and weak
- Lost weight (got lighter)
- Turned YELLOW or white
- Why? No light = no photosynthesis = no food made!
LIGHT onion:
- Grew shorter but STRONG
- Gained weight (got heavier)
- Stayed GREEN
- Why? Light = photosynthesis = makes food!
