⚠️ Be Kind to the Fish!
This lab uses a LIVE fish. The fish will be okay if you:
- Keep the fish wet (use wet cotton)
- Work quickly (don't keep fish out of water too long)
- Be gentle (no squeezing!)
- Put fish back in water right after
🔬 The Question:
Can we see living blood cells moving?
Yes! Fish tails are see-through (transparent).
You can use a microscope to watch blood flow!
🐟 Why Use a Fish?
- Fish tail is thin and see-through
- You can see blood vessels without cutting
- Blood cells are big enough to see
- Fish will be okay if we are gentle!
🧪 What you need:
- 1 small fish (minnow - from bait shop)
- Wet cotton
- Clear plastic bag (small)
- Microscope
- Dropper with water
- Container with water (for fish)
📝 Steps - Do this:
- Get fish ready: Take fish from water. Wrap it in wet cotton. Leave tail sticking out!
- Put fish on slide: Lay fish on microscope. Put tail fin flat on the glass.
- Keep fish wet: Use dropper to add water drops on fish. Keep it wet!
- Look through microscope: Start with low power (4x or 10x).
- Find blood vessels: Look for thin lines with red cells moving.
- Turn up power: Switch to high power (40x) to see cells better.
- Watch blood flow! You should see round red cells moving!
- Put fish back: After 5-10 minutes, put fish back in water!
👀 What to look for:
- Red blood cells (RBCs): Small, round, red dots moving fast
- Blood vessels: Thin tubes carrying the blood cells
- 3 types of vessels:
- Arteries: Blood moves FAST, pulses with heartbeat
- Veins: Blood moves slower, steady flow
- Capillaries: TINY tubes, cells go one-by-one!
📊 Write what you saw:
🤔 Think about it:
- Why do we need blood to flow through our bodies?
- What do red blood cells carry? (Hint: starts with "O")
- Why are capillaries so tiny?
- How is fish blood like human blood?
- Was the fish okay? How do you know?
💡 What you learned:
Blood is alive and always moving!
- Red blood cells carry oxygen to your whole body
- Your heart pumps blood through vessels
- Arteries take blood AWAY from heart (fast!)
- Veins bring blood BACK to heart (slower)
- Capillaries are tiny - let oxygen out to cells!
- Fish and humans both have blood that flows!
